A fire strategy is a comprehensive plan outlining the fire safety measures required for a building to comply with regulations and ensure the safety of occupants. Fire strategies are crucial to help meet the requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and Building Regulations Approved Document B.

An existing building may not have a fire strategy in place. In this case, a retrospective fire strategy can be developed. This will detail the current fire safety measures in place and how the building is used and managed. Older buildings are unlikely to be compliant with current regulations, and a retrospective fire strategy will not mean changes are required.

A fire strategy typically details the following fire safety points:

Means of Escape – Ensuring safe evacuation routes and adequate exits.

Fire Detection and Warning Systems – The provision of alarms and detection systems to alert occupants.

Compartmentation and Fire Resistance – Using fire doors, walls, and other measures to contain fire and smoke.

Fire Suppression Systems – Such as sprinklers, smoke control, and other active fire protection methods.

Access and Facilities for Firefighters – Providing firefighting lifts, hydrants, and clear access routes.

Emergency Lighting and Signage – Ensuring visibility during an evacuation or power loss.

Management and Maintenance – Regular checks, staff training, and risk assessments to ensure ongoing compliance.

A fire strategy report is often required for planning applications, building control approval, and risk assessments in large or complex buildings. It ensures that fire safety is embedded into the design, construction, and operation of the premises.
